I've done a few pieces in my art journal but I'm? getting a Moleskine Sketchbook as mine sketch book that I use has the effect of the paper going crinkly. I love your work, but I get disappointed when you don't show how you made all your art journal pages!!! Please keep them coming!!!!

I guess there are? some similarities, but matt medium is much thinner, creates very few wrinkles and is not sticky when you apply it. I don't get along with Mod Podge as it is way too sticky and thick for me, but it's personal preference really.

You can color? the Gesso with a few drops of acrylic paint and save a lot of time. You can also add something like fine wood dust, river sand, confetti, etc. to the gesso before applying it to the journal, that saves time also.

I never seal pages in my journal, but if I was using charcoal on something that was likely to be handled a lot, then yes, a sealant would be? a good idea. It dosen't smudge in my journal, so I've never bothered.

1. to Chia1432, you can use Elmer's glue, but you will get? more warping if you do, because Elmer's is water based. Use an acid free paste, such as Yes! paste, available at your local craft/hobby store.

This is absolutely gorgeous. My style is similar to yours :3 especially on the balloons. What medium were you using for the green paint? I saw you were able to use? your fingers. I use a lot of Oil, and I heard it isn't good to touch oil paint because it's led based.

I love your video. I like how it is done and the words. It motivates me to keep going with my own artjournal. I was so frustrated, although I am experienced and educated the journey is not over, sure. Thank you for posting this! Part of why I haven't started is that I am insecure about drawing, but what a good idea to use a magazine image and paint over it. Hi chelliedoodles, yes I think it does, also I tend to mix gesso into my paint which gives it grip. Alternatively you can paint a layer of? unmixed gesso onto the box first to prime it like a canvas or even lightly sand the surface to remove some of the shine. Hope that helps :)

Do you prep? the surface of the shiny sides of the boxes before you paint them? I find that you can easily scrape the paint off with your nail. Do extra layers of paint help? Please let me know if you have any solutions to this problem! Thanks. :)

Oh I see, we call it imperial over here. I was amongst the first generation to be taught metric I think, my mums generation and all before her were taught imperial at school. But things don't die out so quickly so I, like others I know my age, have always used both.? And I think you'd hard pushed to find an English crafter who doesn't use inches at some point because of our supplies, 12x12 papers and paper trimmers etc.

I'm a recycle artist & don't use these books as scrapbooks but for creating art and journaling in. If I were to create a book for photos however I would use archival materials but it's been a long time since I've made? a scrapbook so perhaps you may want to ask one of the scrapbookers who you've seen using tp rolls. If I spend money on something (pattern papers, adhesive etc) then I expect it to be archival, if however I am recycling it then I obviously it's likely not to be. Thanks for the qu :)

Hi there, I used the larger cereal boxes for the inner pages (trimmer to the right size for my tracker box) so yes they have some thickness to them, which I really enjoy creating art on as it's sturdy for acrylic paint. All signatures sewn in together and there were 3 signatures (each with 2 cereal box card pages, which when you fold them in half to make a signature creates the 4 pages). If you want it to be scrapbook then I'd recommend adapting? it with acid free cardstock in place of recycled x

It's your journal so you can do whatever you want :) I just use gesso in this journal to cover up what was there before I began painting, and because the page wasn't white originally and I prefer? starting with a white surface because it makes the other paint colors really vibrant. Its basically a primer to use to cover up an already used page so that you can start fresh and new :) You could always use white paint though. Also,? if the paper isn't white? already, I would use either gesso or white paint and put a layer of that down first...because that way whatever you paint next will be nice and bright instead of being dulled down by whatever the color was before :)

@MrPancakes418 thanks! it was pretty easy - i used a binding machine that punched the holes and then slipped the binding coils through the holes and used the machine to push it together. if you don't have a machine or access to one, u could use? binder clips or even try out some neat bookbinding techniques.

I painted it first using fluid acrylics and craft paints. I also did a lot of "drippage" using black paint and water. I painted watered down black paint at the top of the cover, held it upright, allowing the paint to drip. I sprayed more water on to move the paint even more. This created a darker background, so when I painted the white? on top it really popped. I also did the white with a paint pen because that allowed more control.

that's the great thing about art journaling - you just start. so often I look at other people's art journals and wish mine looked like that. but then I realize that if constantly think that and never take time to just "play" in my journal, I will? never achieve my goals. Plus the art journal allows me to develop my own style, which is ultimately what you want. And I've had plenty of oops and mishaps, but that's another great think about an art journal. It doesn't have to be perfect.

I know that 7 Gypsies has an electronic hole punch, but it only punches two holes. So it's good for using binder clips. We R Memory Keepers has a great binding? machine where you can set the number of holes you want to use.

eeek, i somehow missed this comment! so sorry - I used a machine made for binding. The particular one I used is a Zutter Bind-it-All (you could? find it and similar machines in the scrapbooking aisles). The machine punches the holes, then you line up the wire on the hole, and push it together using the machine.

Wow so many nice compliments - thank you. Erm in response to your question I think talent is mostly created not given - I think you just have to have a love for creating something and you learn along the way. I, the same as I think most 'artists' do, don't feel my work is that great - doesn't stop me from doing as it's the only way you grow so if you're artistic? then just do, don't worry about not feeling like you're born with it. Art Journal Technique: Sharpie Ghost

This video shows you how to hide your writing but have it be part of the final image. To recreate this image at home you'll need: 3 or more colors of sharpie or other alcohol ink marker. gesso, wide brush and then what ever you need to finish your image. In this example I covered over my page with water color crayons.

@wlscsms It really would work both ways. I guess the thing to remember is that if you put gesso over sharpie (or alcohol based ink in general) you'll get a ghosting technique. It's fun fun fun. JournalArtista (check her here on youtube and also search for her on UStream) did some lovely stuff with ghosting,? alchohol inks and colored gesso.
