They're not the best pens for blending, although if you use heavier paper (like watercolor) you may be able to achieve that effect as well if you layer it fast enough.? Impossible to smudge, not the best for overlapping either. Other than that they are waterproof, lightfast and acid-free. Don't work well on normal (printer) paper. Hope this helps.

I don't know, the Faber Castell markers I used to have? dried out pretty quickly. Maybe because I had a different type? But these seem to be fairly good quality.

The reproduction of The Girl with a Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer, took artist James approx 90 hours to complete, but thanks to its long writing length and oil based ink, just a single pen was needed to finish the work.

That's not a bad idea, the only thing that might not be good is if the nib has a finish on it... the windex? would eat the finish and make the pen vulnerable to rust... but if not, then I can see nothing wrong with it! I'll have to try that in the future. Thanks for watching!

I clean my nibs? with windex, although I don't know if that is harmful to them. But if the ink is dried, it still comes off and leaves a nice, new looking nib. :)

Another thing you can do to refill catridges (I use fountain/catridge pens a lot but usually use an ink "pump" in the pen) is to buy your own cartridge filler or other really cheap syringe and a bottle of ink. Like you said earlier, you can never reseal a cartridge, but if? you fill one with a syringe and another ink, you can reuse them up until they won't seal against the feed anymore. Also, @scribblingangel, I'm interested in dip pens, and this helpful video was definitely all I needed to see!

I've been? inking side to side mainly because it feels better and the lines look better. I use falcon Esterbrook nibs from ebay have a stockpile of 10+ boxes. Thinner lines look better then thick lines with a dipe pen but you have more control with a brush if you have the patience which I don't have. That hand nib rules btw =)

You can try one without a hole by using a quill, buy a synthetic(fake/plastic) feather or grab one from the backyard/trail/forest etc.. cut the tip at a slant then cut in between the vertex. I? don't know if the same can be done with a branch/stem/stick though

I use waterproof ink as well, and it makes no difference... hot water is still useful, but you must remember to wash you nib immediately after use. There are dissolvants out there that you can buy and use, but I have never owned any myself. ? Hot water has worked for me.

The sand is about 200 degrees F or perhaps a bit more. Warm the sand slowly on low heat and mix it with a utensil so the heat distribution is even. When the you cannot place your finger tips on the sand surface? for more than 3 or 4 seconds then turn the heat on very low and submerge feathers. Good luck.

To avoid uncontrolled discharge of ink one can hold the paper a bit more at an incline and hold the pen at a more horizontally. Holding the pen at or near vertical can be a problem. In the vid you can see how I hold the pen and paper? etc. Thank you!

I just made my first quill pen according to the directions of your video and I must be doing something wrong. The first mistake I know I made is I heated the tip too long and burned about a 1/4 inch of it but I trimmed that off. Other than that the ink runs out way? too fast.Fast as in on the first stroke and comes out way too heavy. Any suggestions?

Thanks for your detailed answer. When you put it this way, I have to agree. And it's darn dificult to animate properly, especially when realistic and by Hand. I have high respect to Disney- or other old-fashioned animation movie artists. A video I helped working on with manual illustrations by me should be out? the week. I have, and this is more detailed than those. That doesn't mean those? works you mentioned are not detailed. This is just more detailed. No work of anime has that many lines in hair no matter who worked on it. It would be too hard to recreate every strand of hair over and over for different frames. Mr. Sultani has only one frame so making as much effort to get in the detail is what it takes to be a true line artist, not a true animated artist. Animating artistry takes more timing and directing.
