Here is what I do .... I gesso (apply with credit card and use heat gun); apply acrylic paints with a credit card (in two colours)... then? I dry it with a heat gun .... I then write with Elmer's Paint Pens (black, white ...and other colours) ... I too, was using sharpies and those kept dying too - no matter how dry - so I stuck to trying that out! I also use for outlining in white and black signo pens (they do smear if wet)
