Thanks for making this tutorial. I've been trying to find a good method to make my own drawing journals. Btw, you can find headbands by the yard in talasonline(dot)com. That way you won't have to waste? time with the glue and the embroidery floss.

I see you had a really lot of work for the cords on the bookends. Use a two colored cord, cut 2 pieces in the breadth of the bookback, clue every one on a piece of thin leather of textile (1cm long, breadth? like bockback), let it dry and than clue it on the boockback ends. So it stays also more fexible.

I've used plain cotton, usually muslin, rather than bandage material/guaze and this works? fine. For the end band I've also taken a piece of bookbinding cloth and have rolled it over a thick piece of twine. It isn't as pretty as your use of embroidery cotton, but it is easier. this is great, thanks. I learned to bind a few years back and am trying to remember all the tricks, etc. tip: for end tabs, you can glue and roll an ultra thin piece of leather or any heavy fabric, around a short string. Let it dry, then cut the string? off the ends.

The tapes are typically linen, cotton, or rarely vellum. You can? buy tape that is specifically made for bookbinding, or cut some strips out of shirting or lightweight cotton. The "bandage" material is called spine reinforcement, and is typically a loose weave material called "mull," but lightweight linen is also used in fine bindings. My suggestion for the headband is to sew it directly into the signatures/bookblock, or onto a piece of cloth..there is a stitch specificially for headbands.

Thanks for this tutorial. It really helped cement my plans for the books? I'm planning to bind. The only differences I making is the pages are already going to be printed on (I'm a writer ^_^), the covers are going embroidered fabric and leather, and I'm going to build a small pvc frame to help make the actual sewing part easier (an idea I got from another tutorial).

Hi,? When sewing the signatures, I put a strip of striped grosgrain ribbon, twice the length of the pages, along the spines. I mark horizontal lines where the pin pricks are and sew through the ribbon as I sew the signatures. When done, fold the ends of the ribbon back and glue along the spine. I don't use the strips of fabric or layers of paper, just the ribbon and it makes a pretty neat job although the first couple of signatures are fiddly. Kay

I don't think bristol would work it's thick yes but just a little too flimsy I would say use illustration board. that is just a little thicker and less flimsy. I've actually used pieces of a? cereal box layered on top of one another.

Glue is just your run of the mill white glue/school glue/PVA. This means it might not be? acid free but it doesn't bother me. When I make a book which is very precious that I want to keep forever I will do a bit more research and check out what other glue is available.
